Kalyan Panday (Sando)

Kalyan Panday (Sando) was born in Calcutta, India on March 4, 1960. He was raised by Yogindra Bishnu Charan Ghosh and his family. Kalyan received his first instruction in Yoga from his father, late Madhu Sudan Panday, who himself was one of Bishnu Ghosh’s best-known and enthusiastic disciples. At the tender age of four, his extensive yoga training began under the tutelage of Bishnu Ghosh. Bishnu Ghosh learned the essence of yoga from his brother Parmahansa Yogananda, yoga master of international repute and founder of the Self Realization Fellowship.


After the demise of Bishnu Ghosh in 1970, Kalyan continued to take intensive Yoga Pranayama training under yoga guru, the late Buddha Bose, who was to become the son-in-law of Bishnu Ghosh. He spent more than 12 years with this highly knowledgeable and erudite yoga master, who exercised remarkable influence over the direction he took in life. He also received a thorough grounding in the philosophy of yoga from Biswanath Ghosh (son of Bishnu Ghosh), Shib Nath De and Dr. P.S. Das.


Though he studied various yoga traditions, he considers his primary influence to be that of the Bishnu Ghosh branch of Hatha Yoga. Kalyan received 1st Class Yoga Proficiency Award in 1976 and completed his four years of Teacher’s Training Program with the First Class in 1980 from Ghosh’s College of Physical Education Calcutta. Thereafter, he began teaching yoga in the same school for many years. Then he went to Japan in 1984 to teach yoga in the Ghosh Yoga Institute, Tokyo and to study the development of yoga in that country. Back in Calcutta, he pursued this interest further when he joined the Research Department of Yoga Cure Institute under the guidance of Rooma De, daughter of Buddha Bose and granddaughter of Bishnu Ghosh, who inherited her grandfather’s wisdom and her father’s skill. It was in 1989 that he received Kriya Initiation from Sri Sri Sarbani Ma, which he considers the greatest achievement of his life.


Since 1990, he has been living in Los Angeles spreading three generations of yoga expertise. His primary focus is peace and purity of the soul through the pathway of Yoga. Also, he considers the presence and guidance of Mr. Netai Chandra Basu in his life as a blessing of God.
